Over the weekend I was honored to be asked by Salina Grande, the Special Events Coordinator at Newport Dunes and Back Bay Bistro in Newport Beach, CA., to participate in their elegant and beautiful Bridal Show held at the Gazebo and wedding ceremony site at the Newport Landings. If you haven’t booked your venue yet, you owe it to yourself and your guests to tour the Newport Dunes in Newport Beach at Back Bay!

Salina did a wicked good job of hand picking some really unique and “pretty darn cool” vendors. I would like to now share with you their vision and websites.

On a personal note, I think weddings “al fresco”, trumps peanut butter on pancakes every time! But even cooler than sipping Champaign and toasting your nuptial at sunset is sitting on the lawn in ultra chic furniture sipping Champaign and toasting your nuptials at sunset. Elegant chase lounges provided by ATB Party Rentals. They have modern and sleek portable bars, and furniture that they customize in any color or fabrication that suits your wedding day theme. Great source for all party decor including swaging, carpets, lighting, dance floors, acrylic pool covers and spandex shapes.

Brides are always in need of runway and red carpet make up and hair. Edith Beltrancan work the hair! Unisex haircuts, creative color and vintage hairstyling. Not your mother’s hairstylist.

Photo booths are great fun for you and your guests. But not all photo booths are created the same. I have seen my share. Some are actually bad science projects gone wrong… believe me. The quality of the booth, camera, printer, background and props, all contribute to the experience and the final photos. Photo Booth Pro has a solution to your photo booth needs.

SHOES! “Diamonds on the souls of her shoes”. Well ok… or “B$” Barash a graffiti artist and local Southern Californian shoe artist and entrepreneur. He does work for TOMS and sells custom made shoes via his etsy site. In addition to being an awesome artist who paints some pretty fab shoes he also donates a portion of the proceeds from his Mustache TOMS shoes to cancer research. Awesome shoes and support for cancer research. WIN-WIN… WIN!

Unique, one of a kind beautiful vintage and shabby chic inspired décor for your wedding. Love Notes, specialties include custom-designed gift card boxes, guest books, ring pillows, and large unique monograms. The card boxes are secure custom beautiful fabric covered boxes that can be used as storage forever! (Sadly cards are often lost or even stolen at larger events where the cards are just sitting on a table) Located in the Los Angeles area, near the downtown Garment District gives Love Notes access to fashionable and unique items. Dream it, and Love Notes can create it! Consider refurbished furniture and decor pieces to give your wedding a stand out touch of elegance. Monogram signs/corkboard, chalkboards, as well as Vintage Finds which can be anything from typewriters, owl figurines, mercury glass… design items that add that special one of a kind detail to your wedding

Woah! Talk about unique! Imagine your wedding bouquet decorated with charms from Cambria’s Charmed Life. Charmed necklaces are the perfect accessory and are easily adaptable to your wedding flower bouquet as well. The idea is to mix and match and make it completely your own. CCL recommends charms in odd numbers but there is no limit to your creation!

The fact that your reading this means your interested in making your wedding day memorable and unique for yourself, your family and friends. It also means I’m interested in photographing your wedding! Your celebration of love deserves the best Wedding Photography.

ORANGE COUNTY WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER – STEPHEN ORLICK

Although I am a hack golfer, none the less I find comfort around a golf course.
There is something about undulating hills, perfectly manicured greens, water elements and forbidden overgrown areas known as OB.
Any time a couple tells me their getting married at a country club I get a bit melancholy and then get psyched. I really enjoy being around country clubs. The Taylors, David and Katrina held their wedding reception at the Aliso Viejo Country Club and I was lucky enough to be their photographer.

David and Kat began their wedding day at the Renaissance Resort. When I showed up to meet David and Kat I was informed their was 4 bridal parties staying at the Renaissance that day. Guess it was a great day to get married in Southern california.
The renaissance is is a very stylish and modern resort. If you are planning a destination wedding being held in Orange County, California, or need a large resort hotel experience for your guests I recommend checking out the Renaissance. A very popular background is a modern waterfall located at the far end of the parking structure.

From the Renaissance Resort it was off to the church in Rancho Santa Margarita to get married! After the ceremony while on the way to the Aliso Viejo Country club we stopped off at the gate to Dove canyon for a few wedding portraits along a wall made of slate.

Located in the hills of Saddleback Valley and surrounded by spectacular views of pristine mountain ranges, Aliso Viejo Country Club has a calming effect that helps you quickly forget the fast-paced life of Orange County. The Club provides a luxurious private club experience, with the very best in golf, and for the Taylors a beautiful wedding experience.

The Aliso Viejo Country Club makes a beautiful backdrop for your wedding photography. The rolling hills and the architecture of the Club house are extraordinary. The dining experience for the guests was much appreciated. Guests chose from thick Rib Eye steak or succulent Chicken breast with a cream sauce.

Thank you David and Kat for trusting me to capture the memories of your wedding day. It was a pleasure to see you two and your friends celebrate your love.

The perfect Bow is an event and wedding coordination company that I work with to deliver romantic wedding photography. The Creative at The Perfect Bow is Jennifer Forth. She and I decided to collaborate on a inspiration shoot showcasing our talents and ideas for a themed wedding.

Jennifer says that her inspiration came through digging in her mother’s China cabinet one afternoon when she came across a beautiful set of vintage mismatched tea cups and saucers. She loved the unique different colors, sizes and patterns. They all have the same motif, details and delicate flowers. Jenn took the tea party inspiration and ran with it. Soft vintage charm, antiques, keepsakes, pink depression glassware, vintage books, old place runners, glass ink wells.
One-of-a-kind pieces from the rustic farm table and chairs to French influence side tables that were used for the cake and escort card tables.

The location for the shoot, a private residence in Irvine with the most beautiful garden. The bright and colorful garden along with the expansive view served as the perfect backdrop to our garden tea party.

How about a little equal time for the groom. The girls are getting made up. How about a great shave for the Groom and his boys at an old school Barber shop with the hot towel treatment and massage at the end?
There are barbershops by young guns who try too hard to be traditionalists. And then there are tiny spots like Barberia where that vintage tradition comes naturally. The entertainment (a great place to catch up on cool movies they play on their PS3) could be anything from a Ska concert, Dumb and Dumber, American History X to Chapelle Show. The reading material, Time/Life encyclopedias of bizarre crimes or Harper’s.
Barberia has a great swag and everyone in there has their own personality. Get a great hair cut and shave… at the end, hot towel and message. The clientele includes lawyers, cholos and rockabillies. The crew is run by Carlos “Exit” Landeros, who works the full hot-towel treatment at the vintage barber chairs.
Help yourself to a beer from the Depression-era fridge. “Exit” insists.

Just leaving Las Vegas and I was thinking if in the right frame of mind when staying in Vegas you could feel like royalty or see the dark, seedy and commercial greedy side of Sin City. This trip I went with the Royalty option…  One of the things that I like about Las Vegas is the ability to tour the Palaces a.k.a. Casinos/resorts. The grandeur and MONEY, that enabled the best creative minds with no limitations to create and design architecture that is at times so over-the-top you just wonder why? Then of course there is the super swanky places where you want to be a part of that scene… A venue, hotel or restaurant where everything is working, the aesthetics of the place, the lighting, music and vibe.

The other “thing” about Las Vegas is the amazing food. Every Rock Star Chef that has worked his/her PR just right has an enormous parcel of land in the casino to serve up grub with panache. Two of my favorites spots are Pink Taco at the HardRock and ‘wichcraft at the MGM.
At the Pink Taco I crave the sweet corn tamales made with sweet corn from the  Coachella Valley. Another one of my favorites food emporium during the WPPI show at the MGM is Tom Calicchio’s ‘witchcraft. Amazing gourmet sandwiches! My favorite combination at ‘wichcraft is roasted pulled pork, cabbage and jalapeño on a Ciabatta role.

But my trip to the desert was not all about indulging the senses. (For the record, Reliquary Spa at the HardRock hotel does not suck) Every year to find inspiration, encouragement and new ideas I attend the WPPI photographers trade conference held at the MGM hotel every February.
This year’s WPPI showcased new gear, some new trends in lighting photos and a good shot in the arm of inspiration. The new trend in lighting is using either a LCD light source or an off-camera flash. Nothing new but just doing it in a new and creative way. On the technology side ScanDisk has introduced a new method of keeping your photographic files in their archival SAFE-Drive because as we know DVDs deteriorate over time and soon that technology will be obsolete like so many other technologies. (remember eight tracks and cassette tapes?) Even flash drives have a limited time on this earth so new solutions to problems from ScanDisk with a hefty price to boot.
As I drive home from this year’s trade show literally, my head is spinning with new ideas and things that I can’t wait to try out. I guess that’s a very good way to leave Las Vegas.

The historic Landmark, Mission of San Juan Capistrano is a real gem of history and architecture and can serve as a backdrop for a family portrait session, engagement session or bridal portraits.

While visiting the Mission you will be reminded of California’s history by touring museum exhibits and museum rooms and throughout our 10-acre grounds of gardens, fountains and adobe preserved architecture.

The Mission of San Juan Capistrano has over 230 years of history. It is a place of cultural, historical, and religious significance. The Mission of San Juan Capistrano was first founded in 1775 by Father Lasuen. The Mission San Juan Capistrano, became the seventh of twenty-one missions to be founded in Alta California. Like the previous six missions, San Juan Capistrano was established to expand the territorial boundaries of Spain, and to spread Christianity to the Native peoples of California. Unlike the British colonies on the East Coast, who brought people from their homeland to form new colonies and oust the current inhabitants, the Spanish believed they could save and re-educate the Native peoples into good Spanish citizens. The idea was to make colonial outposts called missions, led by Franciscan padres and Spanish soldiers. The missions would be a learning center and base to train Native peoples. The idea of the Spanish government and Catholic Church was to convert the Native people to Christianity, teach them the Spanish or European lifestyle, eventually the Natives would live in towns and pay taxes, like other good Spanish citizens.

The Historic Mission San Juan Capistrano is an idyllic setting for photography with an abundance of photo opportunities amongst lush gardens, Koi filled fountains, original adobe buildings and the famous Great Stone Church. This is one of the great treasures of Orange County.

Google “swallows Mission San Juan Capo” for the whole story of the returning swallows.

George Key Ranch in Placentia, California was the back drop for the wedding and reception of Ryan and Nicole. I met with the two and observed a quite excitement in both of their eyes as they expressed what their wedding day was to be like. Ryan anf Nicole both have this quite and disarming quality.
We discussed their timeline for the wedding day and I suggested to maximize the limited time they had for the event, to consider a “first look” option. (This allows the couple to have a private moment or reveal when the bride and groom see each other dressed and ready to marry for the first time.) They indeed decided that their wedding would benefit from a “first look” and couldn’t wait to share this intimate moment. Coordinating a “first look” can be tricky when you throw traffic in the mix but cell phones and the help of an able assistant assured the “first look” was a lovely and romantic event for Ryan and Nicole.
The Morgan wedding had a feeling or yearning for the small town, tight knit community of family and friends. Quite the opposite of techie fast paced, urban chic. I felt as if I was transported to a time and place when life was simpler. A time of picnics in the town square, band shell concerts, circus posters heralding the arrival of exotic and magical entertainment on the outskirts of town, a time of agriculture, bountiful orchards and white picket fences.
Nicole’s family and friends pitched in to help the couple realize their dreams by decorating the reception area at George Key Ranch. All the tables were decorated with flower arrangements in different watering cans as well as bright, colorful linens. The napkins were wrapped with a lovely ribbon tied in an elegant bow. In big block letters a banner that read Nicole and Ryan was hung on the red barn under the bar. What a beautiful backdrop for the celebration of Ryan and Nicole’s commitment to each other!
Great job to my second shooter David Flatt.
Thank you Ryan and Nicole for letting me capture your wedding day memories!

Franciscan Gardens hosted a grand opening showcasing their newly renovated and improved space to wedding planners and wedding professionals Thursday night. Franciscan Gardens, located in downtown San Juan Capistrano near the mission is a beautiful and surprising wedding venue. The space is a large open area and walled garden where your wedding planner and you can create a theme and stage a romantic fantasy wedding ceremony as well as reception in the same space. Franciscan Garden has newly been taken over and operated by 24 Carrots Catering and Events.

At the opening reception wedding planners were able to view the improvements to Franciscan Garden since 24 Carrots Catering and Events has re-vamped the venue. Gone is the out of place and really awkward “Americana” gazebo replaced with a corner stage and neutral arbor where you can create a focal point for a desert station, the DJ or band stand or whatever ideas you may have. Other improvements include new gates that are in front of where typically the wedding ceremony  is performed. This is great visual improvement for guests and your wedding photos. The Garden is somewhat divided in half, one half is where the ceremony can be held and the other half is where the reception and dinner can take place. As a central focal and natural divider, the designers utilized a rather simple and neutral wooden Arbor that can be decorated or used as a rustic garden detail. The space is a blank canvas ready to be transformed into your fantasy. Many areas can be used as focal points and offer an opportunity to hang drapes, lighting, props and creative decorations or just utilize the string of lights already in place and indulge in a California Garden.  An elegant and unique venue with a lot of potential for the creative mind.

24 Carrots Catering and Events allowed the invited wedding professionals to sample their craft as well as view the property. Guests were served flat bread grilled pizza made with goat cheese, arugula, and tomato as well as other tasty combinations. At a desert station was a wonderful selection of mini bite size red velvet cakes and chocolate cakes. Also offered up, sweet caramel and chocolate goodies. My favorite was a Japanese soup spoon that was filled with a custard crème brûlée. A mini bite of crème brûlée heaven. But the hot app of the night was the one bite of my comfort food fave, mini grilled cheese sandwiches. The twist was, they topped the grilled cheese sandwich with a lime soaked jalapeno slice. Mmmmmm!

Dividing the ceremony area from the party area is an wooden Arbor that can serve as a focal point for the Bridal Table. Tonight they used that area to stage an extravagant selection of grilled vegetables including peppers, fennel, and asparagus. Mountains of assorted cheese, olives, salami, prosciutto, salsiccia, finocchiona, pancetta. For a creative designer the possibilities are endless. Franciscan Gardens offers a beautiful wedding under the stars as well as ample photo opportunities at the garden, downtown San Juan Capistrano and the Mission.

Contact Anne Watson the venue and event manager to view the property and discuss your dream wedding.
