Get me to the church on time | LA Wedding

April 27th, 2012

Julie the bride in our story, went with the suspense scenario. As the music began and all her bride’s maids prepaired to walk down the isle, everyone at the church was aking , “where’s the bride”? Well she was fashionably late! That’s how weddings go! Julie showed and once the wedding commenced ( a little later than planned) the priest delivered a very colorful yet warm and personal sermon for Julie and Jose.
After their ceremony while en route to Jose and Julie’s reception we stopped at a hidden gem of a park off Mulholland Drive in the Hollywood Hills for some beautifully fantastic backdrops to Julie and Jose’s bridal Pictures.
Then on to their reception at the Sportsmen’s Lodge. Walking into the Sportsmen’s Lodge you feel a cool retro vibe. The Sportsmen’s Lodge a restaurant and trout-fishing lake opened in the early 60′s where families and celebrities such as Clark Gable came to catch and eat their own dinners, cooked courtesy of the lodge. As the San Fernando Valley evolved, Studio City sprung up around the hotel and historic Trout Lakes.
The Banquet area is built around the lake and is old and classic yet chic and contemporary. The room had a very cool contemporary green glow. Entertainment during cocktails and during dinner was provided by Mariachis. Then DJ Frank Rivera kept the party going with some antics and got everyone dancing, young and old!
Good times! Fun Wedding!
Thank you Julie + Jose!

Kat+David | San Juan Capistrano Engagement Session

San Juan Capostrano’s signature Los Rios Street (the oldest street in Southern California) was the backdrop for Kat and David’s engagement photos. When I asked the two where they wanted to shoot their engagement session, San Juan Capo was a definite must. Dave recalls it’s where he fell in love with Kat and so professed that fact to her. I had a great time with these two walking through the streets of San Juan Capo as well as the nearby State Park where we went all country by the truck and barn.. I wonder if Kat will be sporting some cowboy boots under her wedding dress? Can’t wait to shoot their wedding in October!

“I Forgot My Pants”-Drama at Encinitas CA Wedding

Some time ago a friend of mine took me to a Diana Ross concert. The backdrop for the concert stage was a large video screen and as the lights dimmed the screen came alive with projected video of the singer, slowly sauntering down a large staircase while singing “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”.

I realized that from the video screen extended the staircase. In that moment the singer walked right off the screen and onto the staircase and then onto the stage to a blaze of lights and screaming, adoring fans. I have to admit it was a visually stunning trick of the eye.

It was my pleasure to have photographed the wedding reception of Matthew and Tiffany last weekend. They managed to employed a similar technique that I thought was very clever. You see Matthew and Tiffany decided to elope and ran off to Costa Rica. They got married down there and had their honeymoon. They also had a talented videographer capture the events of the ceremony the beach. A few weeks later they held a reception for their family and friends which started out with the video of their Wedding in Costa Rica

As the video finished up Tiffany and Matt emerged from the private residence where they were holding their reception for family and friends in the exact same wedding attire and sporting sun tans that they picked up down in Costa Rica. You had the feeling you were transported to Costa Rica briefly and then in a time warp, magically popped back to Encinitas California.

Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too? Matt and Tiffany were able to enjoy a romantic “run away get married adventure” and then also were able to share their celebration of love with their family and friends just a few weeks later.

Prior to the arrival of their guests I photographed the Bridal Party and shot Bridal portraits of Matthew and Tiffany. Oh yeah the pants drama. Just as we were about to start our portrait session the groom declared he forgot his pants back at the house and dashed for the car and sped away.  Tiffany got a bit upset seeing that the house was 40 minutes away, one way. It’s kind of hard to take pictures of a couple when all you have is the bride. I assured Tiffany not to worry I’ll get her great pictures quickly when Matt returns and now we have more time for her individual Bridal portraits.

It’s a wedding and crazy things always happen. You need to roll with it and make the best of any and all situations. Well I think NASCAR has found their next superstar. Matthew made the round trip errand in less than 35 minuets. Giving us a plenty of time for a relaxed and fun portrait session.

Feels great to have been part of the fun at your reception. Thank you Matt and Tiff.

Grooms Go Old School – Straight Razor Shaves and Beers

March 20th, 2012

How about a little equal time for the groom. The girls are getting made up. How about a great shave for the Groom and his boys at an old school Barber shop with the hot towel treatment and massage at the end?
There are barbershops by young guns who try too hard to be traditionalists. And then there are tiny spots like Barberia where that vintage tradition comes naturally. The entertainment (a great place to catch up on cool movies they play on their PS3) could be anything from a Ska concert, Dumb and Dumber, American History X to Chapelle Show. The reading material, Time/Life encyclopedias of bizarre crimes or Harper’s.
Barberia has a great swag and everyone in there has their own personality. Get a great hair cut and shave… at the end, hot towel and message. The clientele includes lawyers, cholos and rockabillies. The crew is run by Carlos “Exit” Landeros, who works the full hot-towel treatment at the vintage barber chairs.
Help yourself to a beer from the Depression-era fridge. “Exit” insists.

What is a “Beloved” portrait session?

This new genre of portrait session know as Beloved is as much about the experience of connecting with your partner, as it is about the resulting images.

The Beloved session is for two people who have been in a long-term relationship and would like to give themselves a gift of time together celebrating their relationship and love.

The Beloved session is about taking the attention off of the bills, kids and job and instead focus on the love that was so easy to feel in the early days of a relationship but is lost when life’s responsibilities and stress take over your life.

The Beloved portrait sessions involves fun, almost interview-like questions where you interact with your partner to remember that connection… that spark… that powerful love you once felt for each other so easily.  It’s still there (in most cases) but it’s buried under crazy schedules, worries about money and the day-to-day junk that pile up over the years.

Relight the candle. Take a day to celebrate your love. I promise you’ll take away so much more than just beautiful portraits. You’ll create cherished art for your home that will remind you on a daily basis how you felt when you made the effort and took the time to share your soul with the one you fell in love with.

Golden OC Day at Coto de Caza Golf Club Wedding

Most brides dream of a beautiful sunny day with blue skies as they walk down the aisle.
Desiree and Thomas got sunshine and plenty of it with the golden OC hills as their backdrop for their wedding at the Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club.
Desiree and Thomas decided on a “First Look” ceremony and I found a very private spot under the bridge near the waterfall. The Craftsman-style architecture of the Coto de Caza club house offered ample photo ops as well as the surrounding trees and water features at the club.
The wedding cite was as beautiful as it gets. When Thomas got emotional during his vows, (they wrote additional vows for each other)
it seems everyone got a bit teary eyed. That makes it hard to steady and focus the camera.
On to the reception! Boy – Thomas and Desiree can dance and so can their friends! It seems Thomas was a Break dancer in the day. He started revving up and in full military uniform started spinning on his back.
Fun wedding.
Thanks and all the best Desiree and Thomas.

Be sure to check out the Fusion Video at the bottom of the post.

It wasn’t hard to create beautiful “Wedding Day” imagery with Laguna Beach and Tivoli as the backdrop for David and Danielle’s wedding.
The colors, the location, the people, everything just came together so well. David and Danielle had their wedding at Tivoli, laguna Beach in the morning.
I have to admit this was my first Breakfast Wedding and I had my doubts about a Breakfast Wedding. However I woke up and smelled the coffee.

It seems anytime is a great time to celebrate your love.  David and Danielle are morning people. Eggs, crepes and coffee… A champaign toast, a little dancing… Great beginnings! After the breakfast reception we walked towards the beach to shoot additional pictures and continued enjoying their wedding day. Their wedding party, guests, family and friends were a lot of fun, everyone shared David and Danielle’s energy and attitude. This was a great wedding and I was honored to cover it.

Top O the morning to you, David and Danielle!

Just leaving Las Vegas and I was thinking if in the right frame of mind when staying in Vegas you could feel like royalty or see the dark, seedy and commercial greedy side of Sin City. This trip I went with the Royalty option…  One of the things that I like about Las Vegas is the ability to tour the Palaces a.k.a. Casinos/resorts. The grandeur and MONEY, that enabled the best creative minds with no limitations to create and design architecture that is at times so over-the-top you just wonder why? Then of course there is the super swanky places where you want to be a part of that scene… A venue, hotel or restaurant where everything is working, the aesthetics of the place, the lighting, music and vibe.

The other “thing” about Las Vegas is the amazing food. Every Rock Star Chef that has worked his/her PR just right has an enormous parcel of land in the casino to serve up grub with panache. Two of my favorites spots are Pink Taco at the HardRock and ‘wichcraft at the MGM.
At the Pink Taco I crave the sweet corn tamales made with sweet corn from the  Coachella Valley. Another one of my favorites food emporium during the WPPI show at the MGM is Tom Calicchio’s ‘witchcraft. Amazing gourmet sandwiches! My favorite combination at ‘wichcraft is roasted pulled pork, cabbage and jalapeño on a Ciabatta role.

But my trip to the desert was not all about indulging the senses. (For the record, Reliquary Spa at the HardRock hotel does not suck) Every year to find inspiration, encouragement and new ideas I attend the WPPI photographers trade conference held at the MGM hotel every February.
This year’s WPPI showcased new gear, some new trends in lighting photos and a good shot in the arm of inspiration. The new trend in lighting is using either a LCD light source or an off-camera flash. Nothing new but just doing it in a new and creative way. On the technology side ScanDisk has introduced a new method of keeping your photographic files in their archival SAFE-Drive because as we know DVDs deteriorate over time and soon that technology will be obsolete like so many other technologies. (remember eight tracks and cassette tapes?) Even flash drives have a limited time on this earth so new solutions to problems from ScanDisk with a hefty price to boot.
As I drive home from this year’s trade show literally, my head is spinning with new ideas and things that I can’t wait to try out. I guess that’s a very good way to leave Las Vegas.

Top: Kabaku Sushi MGM, Pork Sandwich at ‘whichcraft MGM, Reliquary Spa – Roman Bath at HardRock hotel,
Middle : Josh De Rox inspiring at WPPI 2012, MGM Confrence Center Home to-WPPI Convention , Mojave Desert in the early hours
Bottom: LCD light wand (model lighting herself), ‘wichcraft at MGM, Emerill’s at MGM

Who’s On First… Look!

Planning a Wedding Day Celebration can be trickey. For example, getting married on Friday? Gotta factor in Friday TRAFFIC! (it will effect you and your guests) Want a sunset wedding? So when do you take your Bridal photos? OK, not a sunset ceramony but the ceremony ends at 5:30 and your cocktail reception begins immediatly. Do you, your family and bridal party really want to miss that time at the cocktail reception because your taking pictures for 55 minutes after the ceremony?

The most comon mistake couples make when coming up with a timeline for their wedding day is too little time. It’s a highly emotional day to celebrate with all your family and friends, do you really think it will go like clockwork? A very popular trend with modern couples is a First Look. The First Look can aleviate some of the time constraints and stress leaving you with adiquit time to create Bridal portraits that you will treasure forever. The other benifit is a very intimate moment and photo opertunity with your fiancee.

I wrote a short article on First looks and their benits. For more detailed information click here. FIRST LOOK

There are couples that still prefer to not see each other until she’s walking down the aisle, and I respect that feeling and emotion. Every Bride (and sometimes-Groom) has a wedding day vission that is personal and unique. The Bride and Groom’s Wedding Dat dreams are to be followed above all else. I just encourage couples to explore if a First look could ease some of the stress on their wedding day. Do your research. I have not yet read from any bride that they regretted doing a First Look. Quite the opposite. From my perspective, the “First Look” is a great addition to the wedding day experience!

Let’s face it we connect and are attracted to people at different levels and in different ways. Some people stand out as universally admired for their strength, character, knowledge and charisma. I was honored to photograph the Bat Mitzvah of a very special 14 year old named Giselle who displayed all these attributes. It was clear Giselle’s family and friends have a very deep admiration and love for this energetic and disarming young woman.

The Bat Mitzvah ceremony was a beautiful celebration of family, community and spirituality. The Bat Mitzvah took place at Emanuel Temple in Beverly Hills, CA.

The luncheon was held after the Bat Mitzvah at the Peninsula Beverly Hills. Of course there was a variety of food, cake and a ice cream sundae bar! A few of the fun activities included, Photo ops at a blow out photo booth, Henna Tattoos, Graffiti Artists spray painting custom designs on Baseball Caps or Book Bags. Giselle, who is fond of dancing, worked the dance floor all afternoon with her girls! Mom, Dad, her Grandmother and Aunt were also tearing up the dance floor.

Thank you Giselle. Mazel Tov!
